Fate

It seems much easier to subside than subsist
When the daily struggles start taking a toll
I wish I could just ignore when fate comes knocking on my door
Its screams bringing out all my wounds in the open

The wounds that I believed to be healed once
It does take a toll on my heart I believe
Makes me forget where I am
Reminding me of every failure of the past

The times I tried and failed so hard
Clouding every good thing that has ever happened
It pulls me close and whispers its achievements
And I shrink like a star in the vast universe

My stubborn heart still beats somehow
Accepting defeat seems hard while I can still try
Fate attacks me at the weakest moments
So everday I try to become a stronger me.

This poem was inspired by the poem ‘Superiority to Fate’ by Emily Dickinson which you can find below. I wrote this poem for David’s Wea’ve Written Weekly poetry prompt where Poet of the Week, Steven S. Wallace, has challenged us to write a poem in any style and any form based on this poem.

Superiority to Fate
Is difficult to gain
’Tis not conferred of Any
But possible to earn

A pittance at a time
Until to Her surprise
The Soul with strict economy
Subsist till Paradise.
